Only the Lonely

As this week starts - I'm making plans after the plans I originally made fell through.  The rest of my life is so nuts that my social calendar is usually the first to die of malnutrition.  In any case - I sat for a bit thinking about how I get along with people socially and it left me with a few important realizations.  More on that later.

Last night's dinner was a success - we enjoyed the Lady's delicious spiral ham and asiago cheese dip - friends brought their own creations and afterward we roasted marshmallows for s'mores on the open firepit out back.  The 49ers lost and the Raiders won - we cheered the Steeler's skin-of-their-teeth win over Green Bay.  I'd like to say that we're responsible for the recipe of the delicious cranberry sauce that The Lady made - we aren't.  Oddly enough the recipe comes from Adam Carolla and you can listen to him give it by clicking below:

Adam Carolla's Cranberry Sauce Recipe

So here's the point: for years I've been wrestling with getting along with people.  Recent changes in my life have made it easier to do so but I had to sit back and think a little deeper about what the blocker was.  I think that I have figured it out - here it is:

Good-Bye, Summer ’09

Last year, summer was a blur.  This year, summer was an epic journey filled with adventure, tragedy, comedy and Kodak moments.

Someone - a very nice young single person - was complaining about how quickly the time passed during her summer off.  She's a teacher...has some months of time that do not require her to be at the job.  I told her at that point 'time passes - all you can do is fill it up with good things'.  I can barely recall Memorial Day Weekend - it seems like it happened 10 years ago.  If I were to write a "How I Spent My Summer" essay - it'd have to include some of the following moments:

  • Seeing the Jeep totaled and just being grateful that The Lady and Little Man were okay
  • Driving a Hummer H3 around for a few weeks - now I know not to buy one.
  • Spraining my ankle in June
  • Taking Little Man camping
  • Playing basketball almost every Sunday - I've never played basketball before and until now was never much of a fan.
  • Bonfire on the beach
  • The California State Fair
  • Night shooting with the new SteadyCam
  • The Annual Convention in San Francisco
  • Little Man and the Fire Station
  • Little Man and the steam train
  • Little Man and the real train
  • The Fremont Art and Wine Festival
  • The Niles Antique Fair

It's been said that I like to be busy and yes, it's true - I like to be busy.  Because of that, I can look back with appreciation on the past summer and not with regret.  When you get older, it's too easy to be focused on the details of life and lose decades of time in caring for the chores, the errands, the tasks and the projects.  I can't say that I did everything right but I enjoyed this summer far more than the last one.

Now it's time to plan how we will spend our fall.

Quick Notes

The perfect moments are happening more often now and I'm still trying to learn to take the time and enjoy them when they happen.  This past Saturday, I was out on the back deck off of the MBR with my feet up on a pile of patio cushions and looking at a cloudless blue sky.  The Chinese maple leaves were green and glowing with the sun and although the sun was warm, it wasn't hot.  Perfect weather and much better than you'd expect for August.  Kids were screaming in the distance at the pool, but otherwise the afternoon was calm.  Just a great moment...nothing else to do but chill and pet the cat when she wandered by. I haven't done that enough in my life but I'm learning to do it more.  Keep reading for Fit Log notes.

Perfect Moments

I like to write down the 'perfect moments' when they happen to me so that I can remember them later on. I'm banging away at writing something when it suddenly occurred to me that I've got my feet up, I'm writing, a particularly good piece of techno is floating through the earphones and, for this moment, all is right with the world.

I like that.

Today marks a few things - first day back to basketball since the ankle incident.  Also getting my gear down for the first camping trip I've taken in years since 2005.   Nicole did make the 'Perfect Onion Rings' and I caught up on a number of indie films I'd been meaning to see.  Little Man scraped the skin off of his knee - first big boo-boo and it's a stunner.  He didn't want anyone touching it all weekend.  This didn't stop him from letting me show him some more swimming stuff - his big smile that comes when I conduct him around the pool while he kicks his legs makes it all worthwhile.

01.12.2009

I've been working with Mike the Trainer for over 3 years now and today will be the last time I will work with him for a while.  While it was difficult to make the break, letting go of this is allowing me to do something else and the good news is, it has the potential of putting me in an even better position to work with him a few months from now.  I was thinking back over the last three years and Mike's been ringside for a large portion of the major events of my life (new jobs, Little Man, filming the Nextmedium commercial, The Lady's chocolate business).  He's been a great sounding board, devil's advocate and unconditional supporter ... it was really hard to finish up today.  We walked out to the car to pick up something I had lent him and as he was walking back inside I called "Mike!"

"Yo!" he called back.

"Thanks," I said.  There was a lot of meaning behind it and we both knew it.
